Message from the Vice President for Research

Winfred M. Phillips, D.Sc. As one of the nation's most comprehensive research institutions, the University of Florida is a leader in research at the boundaries of science. With 20 colleges and schools on a single campus, plus centers throughout the state and around the world, UF has unprecedented resources to explore the frontiers of science. Among the exciting interdisciplinary initiatives UF is currently pursuing are emerging pathogens, nanotechnology, genetics and regenerative health.

University of Florida faculty now receive more than $500 million annually from public and private agencies to conduct research, placing UF among the nation's leading universities. This funding is used to construct new buildings, to equip state-of-the-art laboratories and to support thousands of graduate students.

UF's graduate programs have produced generations of professionals in a wide variety of disciplines, many of whom have risen to positions of prominence in our state, the nation and the world. In addition to the intellectual capital they bring to Florida, these highly educated alumni contribute to the state's economy through their increased earning power.

The success of the sports drink Gatorade is well known, but it is just one of many UF discoveries that have benefited countless people. Other important products include Trusopt, a leading treatment for glaucoma, and the Sentricon Termite Elimination System.

We invite you to tour this Web site and learn more about research and graduate education at the University of Florida.

Sincerely,

Win Phillips
