2024 IACUC Nominations

UF Research is seeking nominations for faculty members to serve on the IACUC Committee for a three year term starting July 1st, 2024.  You may nominate yourself or someone else to be considered by Dr. David Norton, Vice President of Research, for appointment to the IACUC.

The nomination period is open from Friday March 1st, 2024 through Sunday March 31st, 2024.  Nominations may be submitted via the form on the right side of this page.

Significance of serving on the IACUC

The IACUC needs professional, collegial, collaborative, and dedicated faculty to serve our research community by being leaders in the University’s mission to protect animal welfare, ensure regulatory compliance, and help facilitate research.  The IACUC committee and staff serve as a resource to faculty, investigators, technicians, staff, students, administrators, and others to accomplish this mission.

Process

Nominated individuals will be contacted by Michael Mahoney, Director of Research Operations in UF Research.  Mr. Mahoney will inform them of their nomination, describe what serving on the IACUC entails, and confirm if they are interested in being appointed to the IACUC.

Mr. Mahoney will present the list of interested individuals to Dr. Norton and Dr. Kerri O’Malley,  IACUC Chair, for consideration no later than April 28th, 2024.  For any individuals selected to serve, we will contact them, their department chair, and ADR to confirm availability to serve.  After confirmation, Dr. Norton will issue an appointment letter for service to begin on July 1st, 2024.  The IACUC office will reach out to new members to welcome them to the committee and initiate on-boarding.

Background

The 2022 Working Group suggested using a nomination process to identify well-qualified researchers to serve on the IACUC.  Dr. Norton initiated this process for the first time in 2023 which resulted in 5 new members joining the IACUC July 1st, 2023.  We hope to add an additional 5 new members this year.

Offsets, compensation, and recognition

Currently College of Medicine and the College of Veterinary Medicine provide full members a 0.1 FTE offset for serving on the IACUC. UF Research provides an additional 0.1 FTE offset for individuals serving as a Vice Chair, as well as providing the entire offset for the Chair.  Some other colleges may provide alternative offsets for service, such as release from teaching a class.  If your college doesn’t presently offer any offset or release for service, UF Research can assist with trying to obtain an offset for your service.

Starting in FY 24, UF Research is providing $1,500 reimbursement annually to full members for their service.

Starting in FY 24, the Vice President for Research will provide members with an annual Letter of Recognition describing the work involved and impact of serving.

Terms of Service

At present the Vice President for Research (VPR) appoints members to a three year term of service.  Members are evaluated annually by the VPR and IACUC Chair.  If appropriate, the IACUC Chair provides private feedback to members if improvement is needed in productivity, regulatory knowledge, review quality, inspection participation, collegiality, collaboration, or communication.  As part of the year 3 evaluation, the VPR and IACUC Chair assess if the member qualifies for reappointment for another 3 year term.  If so, members are asked if they wish to be reappointed for an additional 3 year term, or if they wish to end their service at the end of their existing term.

Questions about the nomination process or serving on the committee may be directed to Mr. Mahoney at (352) 392-1587 or mmahoney@ufl.edu
