In February 2022, Dr. David Norton, Vice President for Research, convened two Research Improvement Working Groups to identify actionable items to improve the process, efficiency, and culture of conducting research involving animals and humans at the University of Florida. Each Group consisted of faculty and research stakeholders knowledgeable about conducting research at UF, were chaired by esteemed faculty, were self-governed, and presented their results to Dr. Norton in August 2022. UF Research finalized its plans to address the actionable items identified in the reports in November 2022, and presented those findings to UF’s Faculty Senate Research & Scholarship Council in December 2022. The findings and response plans are available below:
It should be noted that neither group had concerns about the welfare of research subjects (animals or humans) or with regulatory compliance. UF is routinely subjected to external oversight by regulatory agencies and accrediting groups and is fully committed to ethical and compliant research.
Two new websites will be launched in early CY24, one dedicated to all issues related to animal research, and a second dedicated to all issues related to human research. We will communicate updates about our efforts to improve research on those webpages.
