Continuation/Incremental/Option Period Funding

My award is not funded in full up front.  It includes future years.  How is this continuation or incremental funding released to spend?

Any funding included in the original proposal but only released annually or at other option periods determined by the Sponsor will be added only when DSP is notified that the funds are now available.  Sometimes the PI must submit a progress report for the Sponsor to release the funds, other times, the Sponsor initiates the action.  For example:

NIH – Grant progress report must be submitted electronically via the NIH Commons by the PI at least two (2) months before the end of the period currently being funded. To find when your NIH progress report is due you may go to the NIH Pending Progress Report Search and enter UF’s IPF number 513806. The returned list will show all progress reports by due date and PI name due to NIH in the next four months or so. When the funds are released, a “Type 5” award is received by DSP who enters an award modification in UFIRST and sends to the department to outline to which projects the budget should be allocated.

NSF continuation grants, the annual project report must be submitted electronically via the NSF FastLane System by the PI at least three (3) months before the end of the period currently being funded.

For particulars of other agencies you should refer to the award’s terms and conditions.
